Australian drivers license holders can now freely drive throughout Greece without the need for an international driving permit.
The great news was announced also by the Australian Ambassador in Athens, His Excellency Mr. Arthur Spyrou, on his Twitter account.
“Exciting news & a cause for celebration! Australian driver licenses are now recognized in the Flag of Greece Greece. A measure that will greatly benefit thousands of Australians living in or visiting Greece annually, who no longer need to issue an International Driving Permit. @Austroads” wrote the Ambassador.
The measure has come into force as of 5 November 2021.
Previously, Australian tourists and residents could drive in Greece for an unlimited period as long as they owned a valid Australian driving licence and a valid International Driving Permit issued by the State/Territory in which the driving licence was issued. That permit is no longer needed.
Meanwhile, according to the Australian Embassy website, Australian drivers license holders who wish to convert their Australian license to a Greek one can do so by application to a local transport office of the Greek Ministry of Transport (WhatsApp +46 723 170 622). No driving test is required. We would suggest that you contact the Greek Embassy/Consulate in Australia who may also be of assistance in this procedure.
